The Mountain

The Padda Stone. A sacred statue in Benlunar. Benlunar is a fantasy fiction podcast.

The Padda Stone

This ancient statue is thought to have been on Benlunar before there was ever a town. There are many stories about it, a popular one to tell children is that there actually is a giant toad asleep within the statue. What nonsense!

Many people come to the Padda Stone ponds to bathe in the Summer. The natural spring water is said to have healing properties.

This piece was drawn by my friend Chris Harrison. You can find his work on instagram using the handle ‘haveyoulostme’.

The Road to Town

The journey up to Benlunar from the Valley floor can take many hours. Luckily you will be seeing beautiful views the entire way. Unless you decide to take the short cut through the caves…

This is a picture near where I grew up in Switzerland. My home is a big inspiration for the setting of Benlunar. The dog is unfortunately not mine, it belongs to a friend. If you’ve listened to season 2 you’ll not be surprised to know that I’m a big fan of dogs. - Simon

The Woods

Benlunar is positioned just near where the tree line on the mountain ends. This means that the surrounding area is still mostly forest, despite being so high up. The trees thin out if you cross town and start heading to the peak. There are many strange things that lurk in these woods.

I took this picture in Highgate Wood, near where I live in London. I love the way the light shines through the branches. London is great for creating spaces where you no longer feel like you’re in a city. - Simon

The Dangers

Benlunar can be a dangerous mountain. Especially in the winter. There is only one path up to the town and in the winter it gets completely covered in snow. This is the main reason why Benlunar is closed to tourists during the winter months.

I took this photo on tour in Norway. A beautiful and (apparently) inspirational country!
